India Gate

India GateIndia Gate originally called the All India War Memorial. India Gate is a monument built by Edwin Lutyens to commemorate the Indian soldiers who died in the World War I and the Afghan Wars.

India Gate is a majestic high arc. It is 42 meters high. From the base of the arc one can get a good view of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

India Gate is a popular picnic spot during winter. India Gate was designed and constructed by Lutyens. He was considered the chief proclaimer in designing the New Delhi plans.

India Gate is extremely beautiful monument and the arc stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone which rises in stages to a huge molding.

Above on both sides is inscribed INDIA, flanked by MCM and to the right, XIX. The shallow domed bowl at the top was intended to be filled with burning oil on anniversaries but this is rarely done.

The best time to visit India Gate is after sunset, when the structure is floodlit and the atmosphere becomes pleasant. In the evening people come here for perambulation and children can be seen playing on the beautiful green lawns and around the trees that surround the structure.

Visitors can enjoy boating in the water bodies alongside the lawns. Fountains located nearby are also illuminated with colored lights to add further resplendence to the ambience. The fair-like festive environment is enhanced by numerous hawkers selling ice cream, street food, toys and balloons.

Every year on 26th January Republic Day Parade is held, the President of India places a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti to pay his respects to the Indian armed forces. Republic Parade is a grand parade that takes place along Rajpath. Marching contingents, tanks and weaponry, as well as colorful floats, folk dances and school children from different parts of India, take part in this resplendent ceremony that celebrate's India's Republic Day.
