Akshardham Mandir

Akshardham Mandir, DelhiAkshardham Mandir is also known as Swaminarayan Mandir. Akshardham Mandir is located on the banks of the Yamuna River in east Delhi. The temple has become one of the most important tourist destinations in the city. Akshardham Temple has been constructed under the patronage of the Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). Akshardham Temple was inaugurated on 7th November, 2005.

Akshardham Mandir is one of the biggest and most intricate religious places of worship ever constructed. It combines various different and contrasting architectural styles of Hindu temple architecture of India like Rajasthani, Gujarati, Mughal, Jain and Orrisan. Akshardham Mandir has been built using marble and red-sandstone.

The main monument of the Akshardham Temple is 140 feet in height and is made of pink sandstone and white marble. It is common belief that Pink color symbolizes "bhakti" and white being a color of 'purity' symbolizes "eternal peace".

Akshardham Mandir is good example of the modern Naqqashi with traditions. The main structure has been embroidered with 20, 000 statues, floral motifs, arches and exquisitely carved pillars. The Swaminarayan sect of Hinduism, which is very popular in Gujarat, has constructed the Akshardham temple. It is estimated that, the temple has been built at the cost of nearly 100 million Dollars.

Akshardham temple is spread in the area of approx. 100 acres on the banks of river Yamuna. The whole campus of temple is covered with beautiful grass carpet and lush green shrubs, ornately carved pillars, domes, murtis and statues of India's great saints and divine personalities. There is also an IMAX theatre, a food court, a gallery and an open-air theatre. In the night, the magnificent campus is lit with tungsten bulbs and looks stunning.

Akshardham temple is also known for its "Cultural Education and Entertainment". Akshardham temple has 2 huge exhibition halls; one exhibits Indian values through light-and-sound show, and the other one will take you through the journey of Indian cultural heritage.

Things to do inside in temple
Hall of Values - Universal values for mankind presented through audio-animatronics and light and sound diorama presentations from the life of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

Garden of India

Visitors are requested to make note of the fact that there is a strict ban on all electronic items including cameras, tobacco and pretty much everything except the clothes on your back. Thankfully there is a cloakroom where visitors can leave their worldly belongings.
